A WORD TO ROOKIES:

Hello there, Rookie Rescuer! My name is Tommy Neiman. But you can call me 'Firefighter Tom.' I'm a real firefighter and also a paramedic. I'm just like the men and women you see on TV who ride in fire trucks and ambulances with their lights flashing and their sirens blaring as they head to the scene of an emergency.

Sounds exciting, right? Well, it is. But it can also be scary and even dangerous. One thing is for sure; it usually means lots of hard work. It especially means a lot of prayer-prayer that God will help me do the best job possible and that He will watch over my fellow firefighters and me.

A rookie is someone who is beginning something for the first time. As you begin this journey of studying about firefighting and rescue work, guess what? You are officially a Rookie Rescuer!

To be a true Rookie Rescuer there is certainly a lot to learn, and that means studying hard. That's why I'm excited you are going to be reading and learning about emergency work in Sirens for the Cross for the Rookie Rescuer!

During our journey, I will refer to you a lot as Rookie Rescuer or Rookie. As a Rookie Rescuer, you will read about actual calls I've responded to in my job as a firefighter and paramedic. You will study the different things firefighters and emergency medical responders do, the equipment we use, the gear we wear and the danger and excitement we face.

Even more exciting, you will learn about some of the wonderful things God has done and how He has taught me important lessons in life through emergency work.

After each story, you will find some words and definitions that all Rookie Rescuers should know. You'll also get special messages from pagers that are pictured. Then I will ask you some questions to see how well you understood the words. Next comes the most important part. You will be asked to read and answer questions about how God's word applies to the call.

At the end of the book there are some fun activities for you to do before you receive your official Rookie Rescuer Certificate. SO GET READY!

BLESSINGS, ROOKIE RESCUERS !!
